CAMBODIAN RABIES ERADICATION PROGRAM {CREP}

EDUCATE * VACCINATE * IDENTIFY * NEUTER

In September 2016, Bengthay Tep, asked me to propose a rabies program on behalf of the Director General,  Sen Sovann.  Since then, I have been working alongside provincial government departments with a group of amazing volunteers to establish the program.

These things take time and the limiting factor has been funding and resources.  Our program (excitedly) began in the Pouk District in May 2019, more details to follow.  Our program is about eradicating rabies from one village at a time, by educating people about rabies, then vaccinating and identifying those dogs. Vaccinating dogs without education and identification help that individual dog but does not contribute to the eradication of rabies.  We can do both so that is the goal.  Other countries have eradicated rabies and Cambodia can too.

Before we vaccinated the dogs in two Pouk villages, the village chiefs committed to being a rabies-free village by continuing annual rabies vaccinations.  We were supported by both the village and commune vets who made our day run super smoothly.  This also meant there is a contact person for the villagers to affordably continue with the rabies vaccinations in the future.

We are planning educational videos and flyers in Khmer and English.  When they are finished, they will be posted here, on government websites, non-government organisations involved with rabies control programs and anywhere else they may be useful. Neutering is also important for animal health/welfare so we'd like to initiate neutering programs when we have the necessary funding and veterinarians.

The following information will be able to answer many questions about rabies and the CREP.
